通过写PS，你将更了解你自己，清楚自己想要什么样的生活，理清自己为什么要去美国，以后将要成为什么样的人。

描述为什么这个graduate program适合你，不要用一些空洞的赞美性的语言，一定要be specific, be analytical。 一定不要出现一些粗心的错误，那只能证明你不够认真对待。 避免说一些空洞无意义的套话，避免陈词滥调。

这里可以举个例子。 修改前：In the first project Imanaged, I learned many valuable lessons about the importance of teamwork. 修改后：In the first project Imanaged, I made an effort to incorporate all my colleagues as equal members ofa team, soliciting their feedback and deferring to their expertise as needed. 修改前的这句话很空洞的讲team work，没有任何details;修改后的话就展开讲了我是怎么展现teamwork的。在写PS的时候一定要注意展开这些细节。最好的方法就是以自己的亲身经历开始，让那些展现你的quality和personality的东西自然流露出来，你的那些品质不需要总结性的generalities, 人们会从你对自己经历的specific details的描述判断出你有哪些quality。

不要企图把你所有的经历都写进PS里，PS追求的不是广度，而是深度。好的PS是深入挖掘一个或两个主题、时间或观点的细节。 注意避免敏感话题，因为你不知道admission officer的个人偏见。 不要用冗余的长句。

短句更加有力，因为他们更加direct和to the point。举例： 修改前："My recognitionof the fact that the project was finally over was a deeply satisfying momentthat will forever linger in my memory." 修改后："Completing theproject at last gave me an enduring sense of fulfillment." 像the fact that这种词就是完全冗余的。 Brainstorming 1. 如何写作个人陈述(ps/sop)等申请文书的几个问题

---------------------------------------------------------个人陈述/自述一般是指personalstatement（简称PS），有些学校也要求写statementofpurpose(简称SOP)，这二者的区别是什么，不重要；绝大多数学校可以等同对待，都一样，总之就是要写篇文章介绍自己。字数和篇幅上，有的学校有字数限制比如500字（这个好少），但是一般情况下，只要控制在1-2页纸内，格式上别字数太多、密密麻麻的就成。

申请文书还包括你的简历（CVorResume）和推荐信（理论上是老师写，实际上国内一般是学生自己写）。

有的学校要求SOP和PS都写，但是这种要求应该都可以忽视；有的学校还要求博士申请人写researchproposal之类的东西，但是这样的学校很稀少。这篇文章里，Warald谈一下申请文书写作的几个问题。首先，文书写作服务于申请过程。你提交的各种文书，都要经过录取审理的流程，然后作为美国高校录取委员会的教授们了解你的重要甚至是唯一途径。

所以，你写任何文书，都要考虑一下，是否符合申请过程的特点？建议你阅读Warald的文章：因为申请人太多，很明显，每个人老师花在每个人申请人身上的时间很短，除非你真的很牛背景很吸引人，否则老师读你所有材料的时间不会超过几分钟了。就像读论文/paper一样，学生们看篇paper要累死累活看上一段时间，但是这些professor们看paper，可能跟看杂志小说似的，老手们可以几分钟迅速过完，觉得有价值才会回头细看，价值不大的直接扔掉。这种读paper的风格在申请过程中也会有体现：申请人的材料比如提交到applyyourself系统里的，是按照固定格式存好的，老师们可以迅速的跳到关键section读你的材料，然后迅速做判断。

想象一下你在读了n篇文章之后，开始读第n+1篇，你的脑子已经开始麻木了，你做好了心理准备，下面这篇可能很好，也可能很糟，同时你很清楚，你需要迅速做出判断，否则手里的文章看不完。然后你看到了千篇一律的开头，说你小时候就喜欢各种电子玩具，你老爸也是工程师，所以你自然而然的本科就选择了读ee；你从小就喜欢拆和组装各种东西，或者你五岁的时候老爹送你个礼物，你玩的着迷了，所以你读本科就选择了机械；你从小就喜欢用计算机，所以选择了读计算机。你继续仔细读这种文书的兴趣有多大？更有甚者，明明是要读很有专业性的硕士项目比如下面几年要学习电路如何设计布局、如何降低电网传输损耗等技术课程，系里以培养你成为工程师为目标，毕业生们找的也是技术活，但是你的个人自述里相当的篇幅讲了自己做学生工作、课外活动的leadership，或者参加辩论赛表现优秀，简历里一堆所谓的综合、全面发展，这帮局限做一个专业甚至一个小方向的老师们会怎么想？你咋就断定教授们想在学生当中找个中国人当leader呢？还有，有个英文单词叫geek，理工科本质上是geek类型的老师不少，有些geek对leadership兴趣不大，甚至听了小本科生们大谈自己有leadership会笑的，觉得你不去读businessschool跑来读scienceandtechnology很不match。

The key question to think about before you write, is just as much what you put in to your personal statement as to what you also leave out. You have a choice, too much information makes it less precise, too little doesn’t show your capability to its fullest extent therefore you need to aim for the middle ground.
